Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients.
Our pharmacy staff is trained in compounding prescription medications, including basic creams and ointments, capsules, suppositories, and troches. We offer compounding services for hormonal preparations, dermatological products, pain management, medicine flavoring, and much more.
Unlike brand-name or generic medications that pharmaceutical companies produce at scale, compounded medications aren’t commercially available. Not having been made by a pharmaceutical company, these medications don’t have a trade or brand name like the typical
prescription you would have filled. Compounded medications are made for you at the pharmacy based on your doctor’s prescription.
The benefits associated with compounding generally focus on providing patients with pharmaceutical products that have been customized to fit their own unique needs when standard marketed drugs fail to do so.
Compounding is often required for medical reasons; some patients require a particular non-essential ingredient to be removed from their medication to prevent an allergic reaction.
Others require compounded medication to acquire an exact dosage amount that is unique to their own personal needs and which may not be available in the marketed drugs.
Patients may also seek out compounding services for more optional reasons. Frequently, patients will need their medications in a different form. For example, suppose an elderly or pediatric patient has difficulty taking their medication in capsule form. In that case, a compounding pharmacist can provide the same medicine in a cream base form to allow the patient to apply the medication topically. They may also offer the drug in a syrup or solution form for easier administration. Pharmaceutical compounding is also used to change the taste and color of medications to make them more palatable and aesthetically appealing to patients, especially with children in mind.
